Growing Green
Ideas for individuals and families
Aim to avoid plastics, especially single-use, black plastics, unneeded packaging, individually wrapped items
Use reusable and refillable items, recycle, use your right to refuse (straws, ketchup packages, plastic bags, flyers)
Buy in bulk if you can, cook at home, meal plan, avoid plastic bottles (even for health reasons!)
Incorporate or switch to plant-based meals, cease or slow your dairy intake
Limit food waste, buy in season, grow food and compost if able
Shop less, support local
Be aware of common plastic items that can go under the radar (tape, toothpaste tubes, band-aids, recycling and garbage bags, headphones, pens, bread clips, snack wrappers, gum packaging, stickers, packaging from shipping)
Explore new alternatives like biodegradable dental floss, reusable feminine products,
Make a waste challenge, see how long you can go without filling a garbage bag
If you have a pet, avoid smaller individual packaging, look for eco options such as corn cat litter
Walk, bike, take public transport, car pool, drive less, consider low or no carbon vehicles
Plant trees, leave the leaves, use rainwater, avoid pesticides, try no-mow areas, pollinator or rain gardens
Pick up litter, educate and talk about not littering
Protect and respect wildlife, watch where you step and drive, relocate spiders, mice, or bugs, leave flowers, mark windows for birds, cut garbage that could cause entanglement, enjoy from a distance, leave only footprints
Insulate your home, make improvements to heat or energy efficiency, advocate the same for work buildings
Invest in a green pension or socially responsible investing (SRI), put pressure on banks for this option
Become knowledgeable about the world, to know and face the issues, but also for joy and awe
Use a browser like ecosia which plants trees, say no to using AI, make a habit to spend time away from screens
Turn off the lights and tap, don't put anything unnatural down the drain
Choose natural, chemical and cruelty free products (shampoo, make-up, deodorant, soaps, cleaning products)
Learn new tricks, like reusing cooking water, making toothpaste, citrus peel cleaning, coffee grounds for gardening
Purchase quality items that will last, use community options to mend, repair or share used items
Discover repurposing, go to yard sale or second hand shops, create art, find material for crafts, refurbish old items
Be aware of unusual recycling programs - for markers, pens, cigarette butts, material, electronics, books, glasses, contact lens packaging, print cartridges, old medicine, paint, specific brand packaging (food, toys)
Support companies that practice, promote, and support green organizations or initiatives
Write or call politicians and companies, assume someone needs to hear that it's important
Boycott, protest, vote, generate awareness, donate, research, sign petitions, join organizations, talk to people
Volunteer, add your skills and passions to causes and groups
Find a green hobby, expression, or connection that you can visit often and reminds you why these actions matter (gardening, cooking, crafting, walking, time with animals, being near water or trees, outdoor sports, community etc)

Sustainable gift-giving ideas
Purchasing an experience or service can be an exciting gift! It gives an opportunity for personal development or pampering. Sign someone up for a lesson, workshop, or membership, give a gift card, travel voucher, or ticket to an event, give time, expertise, or labour, solve a problem or make a task easier, plan an outing like bowling or cross-country skiing, make a scavenger hunt or try an escape room, There are many options that don't involve plastic or buying items.
Skip single-use wrapping paper and tape. Try cloth gift bags, reused boxes or bags, string, recycled paper, folding material, or covering a gift with a gift
Eco-friendly items can make practical and personal gifts. Give self care with natural soaps and shampoos, purchase a reusable item with a decorative design, provide a plant, a care package of reusable toiletries & kitchen items, or a basket of local munchables
Think creatively and thoughtfully - make or support the arts! Buy from a local artist for a gift that lasts or make a card, song, poem, play, playlist, game, invitation, drawing, painted flower pot, printed photo, book with pressed flowers, knitted socks, handmade jewellery, homemade food, wax candles, etc)
Give cash, donate to a cause on their behalf
Have a re-gift party, use reusable decorations and food options
