- Dream Green DreamsDespite the recycling symbol one sees on a plastic container indicating it is recyclable, most plastic containers are NOT recyclable except in very rare circumstances.. Most plastic containers we take to a recycling facility are not recycled but are put into a landfill where they slowly break down and produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Plastic is made from petrochemicals (oil) which perpetuates the climate emergency. Avoiding purchasing plastic is my way of contributing to the accumulation of plastic in landfills. But many plastic bags, toys, single use products, etc. do not end up in landfills, rather they end up in our oceans or green spaces where they slowly break down into microplastics which are consumed by animals or, worse, they get into the water table and end up in our drinking water. Microplastics are a scourge on our planet and will be discussed in a future article. Then there are plastics which are unrecyclable. These plastics absolutely cannot be recycled but one woman in Kenya has discovered a way to recycle them. Nzambi Matee has found a way to use these plastics to make bricks. These bricks can be used in building, and they are lighter than standard bricks and much cheaper. In fact, a woman in the US has started a similar business based on the model discovered by Ms. Matee. The demand for Ms. Matee's bricks is overwhelming. She routinely has more orders than she can fill. It is wonderful to see that plastic can be reused but Ms. Matee has also created jobs in her local community making these bricks. For more information, I urge you to see the following link from the fantastic BBC program, "Discovery" subtitled "Unstoppable", a show highlighting the unsung heroines of science and their world changing inventions.. Cheers, and thank you to the great BBC! https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct5rml
- Advocacy ActionA prime example (pardon the pun) of a company flouting common standards of decency is Amazon. The working conditions in Amazon's distribution centers are horrific. Workers have almost no breaks, even to visit the washroom, and must literally run about filling orders. The pay for this work is abysmal and the benefits are almost non-existent. Many people shop with Amazon but I am not one of them. I have boycotted Amazon because of these terrible working conditions, all while Amazon rakes in billions of dollars in profits. How difficult would it be to pay a decent wage while improving working conditions? Not very. Does the boycott of Amazon by one person affect the bottom line of a mega corporation like Amazon? No, probably not but for me it's the principle of it. I cannot contribute to the exploitation of people by shopping with Amazon because this is NOT RIGHT. Boycotts are effective, and keep my conscience clear. If there is a company with whom you disagree about their working conditions or their effect on our precious planet, I urge you to consider boycotting them.
